Hashtags on Instagram are a great way to get extra eyes on your photos.  Each hashtag works as a search, and links your photos to others in the same niche, making it easy to get them discovered by relevant users.  There really is no exact science for how to use hashtags, but here is a guide to get you started, based on my own trial and error.

  • First of all, use only relevant hashtags, it may be tempting to use a trending tag on your photos, to get it seen by a ton of users, but if its not relevant to the tag you’re trying to jump on, it will come off as spammy, and in social media, spammy content is basically social suicide.
  • Try to mix up using popular and obscure hashtags, for example try using #Mexico which at the the time that I am writing this has over 25, 000,000 photos attached, along with #SandInMyToes which has less than 50, ooo
  • Create your own tags, and use them, a lot.
  • Look Around at the tags your peers are using, and use them as well, as long as they are relevant to your pictures as well.
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word in the hashtag to make it easier to read
  • Quality over quantity.  Instagram will allow up to 30 hashtags in a post, but that is going to look like a big block of spam, so try to keep it around 10-15 max.

Get Geographical

Think Country, state. province. town, along with nicknames to show where you are, and use them all. Don’t forget to include airport codes as well
For example
#Toronto #YYZ #Ontario #GTA #Canada #The6ix
Make sure to look up the local tarvel authorities and see what their hashtags are as well
#DiscoverFlorida #TourismThailand #Iamsterdham
